4 Reasons To Add Retaining Walls To A Patio Project

Blog

When people build patios, they often focus on the surface. There isn't anything wrong with patio pavers, but you shouldn't leave them to do all the lifting. Retaining walls can add lots of functionality and interest to a patio. Here are four ways retaining walls can upgrade a patio.

Boundaries

Many patios end up being flat and relatively featureless. Other than the divide between the patio pavers and the grass, there isn't much of a boundary. Retaining wall stones impose boundaries. If you want to route people away from a less appealing part of the yard, for example, a retaining wall at the edge of a patio can discourage them from drifting in that direction. Particularly if you're dealing with small children or pets, these more formidable boundaries can serve as subtle hints to stay away from certain parts of the property.

Height and Depth

By their nature, patio pavers aren't the most vertical or deep of design elements. That is fine, but they need a helping hand. Retaining wall stones can provide height and depth. Overall, this gives a patio greater visual depth. If you build up planters using a retaining wall, you can use vegetation to create layers of depth, too.

Retaining walls also allow you to dig the patio into the ground. This allows you to be creative, such as integrating the patio with a finished basement area. The space can become a very inviting indoor-outdoor combination for entertaining guests. Another approach is to build up some earth and add retaining walls to create a similar effect with less digging.

Texture

A load of wholesale patio pavers will add a little texture to the design. However, it's going to be one texture and a relatively smooth one at that. Stones can add crags, and they also offer a wider range of textures and colors. Especially if the initial design of a patio looks a bit monotonous, an extra bit of texture can make it pop. The stones will also pick up nearby lighting, leading to changes in the appearance of the textures as the day goes on.

Visual Integration

The different design elements of a patio ought to integrate well. If you want to install an outdoor kitchen, for example, you can visually integrate it using retaining wall stones. Similar textures and near-complementary shades can then tie the walls and other vertical elements together with the patio pavers. The net effect is a more visually integrated design that won't bore visitors.

Creating A Safer Work Environment

I have always been someone who loves to know more about the way the world works, which is part of the reason I started reading about industrial and manufacturing processes. I have always found it fascinating that professionals can create things by hand, and so I started attending factory tours, asking questions, and doing as much research as possible. It was really interesting to see how much of a difference my efforts made, and before I knew it, I was able to completely change the way I thought about manufacturing. This blog is here to help other people to appreciate the majesty of industry. Check it out!
